Bside Solo
Make an error and learn.
Make mistakes and grow.
Lose, fail and keep falling
until you fall like a god.
Inspired by Auggie Wren, the character played by Harvey Keitel in Smoke (1995), I set out to record a short video clip from exactly the same spot every day, at the same time of day, during the second lockdown.
So, from the 2nd of November 2020 to the 3rd of December of the same year I did like Auggie Wren. Each day, I held my phone against the window frame of my bedroom and, window fully open, I filmed the world outside for two minutes every day at roughly the same time.
The result is a collection of images that fade and morph into one another, where light plays a central role while the mood of the trees and surrounding vegetation shifts over the course of time. This track holds it all together.
Alerta is a sound salad layered over a 120bpm, a partially binaural sonic experience in which beats and synths develop for 3 minutes and 47 seconds to evoke tension, pressure and the relationship between reality and the dark world.
Jose Solo’s first official release is a loop-based banger inspired by the sound of the Big Beat, a genre that gained popularity at the end of the millennium with artists like Chemical Brothers, The Prodigy or Fatboy Slim. Produced about 20 years after the genre’s popularity decline, it was released in February 2021, during the last stages of Lockdown, and remixed and re-released in March 2024.
